Why you need AquaDechlor

A quick history

In 1908, Jersey City in New Jersey became the first city in the US to start using chlorine to disinfect their water supply. In 1929, Cleveland Ohio became the first to use Chloramine as a sanitizer. Prior to the addition of these chemicals, typhoid ever, cholera, dysentery and diarrhea were very real possibilities of drinking city water. But whatever, those were concerns of people who lived over 100 year ago right? Nope.

It actually took until 1974 for the government to pass the Safe Drinking Water Act! That's right. There are people alive today that lived in a time when there were no treatment or safety standards for municipal water systems.

All city and municipal water is treated

As untreated water travels through miles of pipes, a slimy biofilm builds up inside of the pipes. This biofilm slowly releases bacteria over time. As water systems age, corroded pipes, and supply breaks can directly add contaminants to the water supply. Flooding, agricultural runoff and even faulty septic tanks are all pollution threats to reservoirs and other raw water supplies.

By adding chlorine or chloramine to the water, the disease risks from these contaminants is virtually eliminated. 

Chlorine and chloramine are deadly

Chlorine and chloramine are water sanitizers. They are added to city and municipal water systems to kill bacteria and viruses along miles of pipes. Forms of chlorine are used in household cleaners and bleach to kill germs and remove stains. Chlorine gas was used as a weapon of war.  There is no doubt that chlorine and chloramine are deadly.

The question is, how much chlorine can you put into water to kill microscopic organisms without killing the people drinking the water?


The current standard is measured in parts per million (ppm), or mg/L.  The EPA sets an upper limit of 4 ppm. But regardless of the levels added, as water travels through the pipes, the amount of chlorine at the tap will have dropped. It all really depends on how far the water has to travel to get to you. If you are too far away for chlorine to last the whole journey, then your water supply will use chloramine instead, which has a stronger bond and lasts longer.


It's a balancing act, pros vs. cons.  Yes, you are drinking the sanitizers and yeah, there are scientific studies that show measurable shifts in your gut bacteria composition, but any risks are far outweighed by the benefits of safe drinking water. In fact, all mammals, large and small, share this benefit. But what about animals that "breathe" the added chlorine?


The gills of fish and other sea creatures are irreversibility destroyed by chlorine and chloramine. This is for them, what chlorine gas would be for humans. There is no chance of survival. There is no acceptable limit, any detectable amount is deadly for them. As a good fish keeper, you must ensure that these sanitizers are eliminated from their environment.

They are not removed by time, sun or aeration

Myths and old wives tales about how to remove chloramine from water abound. No, boiling water will not remove chloramine. Neither will sunlight or sitting in an open container. Chlorine, on the other hand, can be boiled off and will dissipate in open containers left out in the sunlight over time. But the question is, which one is your water treated with?


Because chlorine has a strong "swimming pool" odor that can affect every home and business, water utilities prefer to use the less noticeable and weaker smelling chloramine. The strong smell of chlorine actually affects the flavor of soda fountain beverages at restaurants. This brings local commercial influence into the decision process with the city or county, making chloramine even more likely. 


Carbon filters, especially catalytic carbon, will trap chlorine and chloramine, but they are "filled" very rapidly and once they are full, the sanitizers pass right through. The truth is, most people and businesses do not change the carbon filter often enough to continually remove chlorine or chloramine from their water.
